Frequently Asked Questions
If I need minor home modifications, like grab rails, does the cost come from my core supports budget?
Yes, home modifications that are minor and non-structural can typically be funded from your Core Supports budget, provided they are related to your disability and approved in your plan.
What is the difference between a "Support Worker" and an "Assistant in Nursing" under my package, and which should I choose?
A Support Worker assists with community access and daily tasks, while an Assistant in Nursing (AIN) has specific clinical training for personal care like catheter management. Your needs will determine which is appropriate.
Can I request a specific support worker if I find one I particularly like and trust?
Absolutely. You have the right to choice and control, and you can request a specific worker. Good providers will always try to accommodate this to ensure a good match.
If my regular support worker is sick, is the provider obligated to find a replacement?
The provider will try to find a suitable replacement, but it is not always guaranteed. Your Service Agreement should outline the provider's policies for managing staff absences.
Can I use my funding to pay for a cleaner to do my entire house, or is it only for areas I cannot maintain due to my disability?
Funding is for assistance you cannot manage due to your disability. The cleaner should focus on areas essential for your health and safety, not a full general clean of the entire house.
What happens if I don't use all the funds in my plan by the end of the year?
Unused Core Support funds can typically be rolled over for up to 12 months, but Capacity Building funds usually expire at the end of your plan. Check the specific rules with your planner.
Am I allowed to use my Core Supports funding to try out a new therapy or piece of equipment that isn't explicitly listed in my plan?
For Core Supports, you have flexibility. You can use this funding to try new things if they align with your stated goals and are considered reasonable and necessary.
If I want to change my plan management type (e.g., from Agency to Self-Managed), how do I do it?
You can request a change to your plan management at your plan review. You can also request a plan review early if your circumstances have changed significantly.
What is considered "Supported Independent Living" (SIL) versus what a Home Care Package can cover?
SIL is for 24/7 support in a shared living environment for help with tasks like personal care and meal preparation. A Home Care Package is for lower-intensity support to help you live independently in your own home.
Can I use my funding to pay for a gardener to maintain my entire yard?
Funding is for assistance you cannot manage due to your disability. This might include basic lawn mowing for safety, but not necessarily complex landscaping or ornamental gardening.
If I am Self-Managing, what records am I legally required to keep for the NDIA?
You must keep all invoices, timesheets, receipts, and service agreements for at least 5 years to prove that funds were spent on reasonable and necessary supports.
Can I use my funding to purchase a smart home device like a Google Nest to control lights and temperature with my voice?
Yes, if it helps you manage your home due to your physical disability, this can be funded as low-cost Assistive Technology under Consumables or Capital Supports.
If I have a degenerative condition, how can I ensure my future needs are considered in my current plan?
During your planning meeting, clearly discuss your prognosis and expected future decline. Planners can build "provisioning" into your plan to set aside funds for known future needs.
